    Intent

    At The Woodland Federation of Peak District Schools, we believe that effective Personal, Social and Health Education is essential to allow children to develop the knowledge and skills required to make well-informed decisions throughout their life.

    We aim to deliver a PSHE programme which supports children to achieve their academic potential, and leave our school equipped with the skills they will need later in life.

    Implementation

    PSHE is primarily taught using the PSHE Matters scheme of work.  This scheme is supplemented by 'Clued Up for Growing Up' and Common Sense Digital Literacy.  Our curriculum is mapped over a two-year cycle consisting of 12 units. 

    • Drug Education - including how to manage risk and peer influences
    • Exploring Emotions - including how to recognise and manage feelings and emotions
    • Being Healthy - including the importance of looking after our mental health
    • Growing up - including the Sex Education element
    • Changes - including loss
    • Bullying Matters - including how to ask for help
    • Being Me - including identity and community
    • Difference and Diversity - including challenging stereotypes
    • Being Responsible - including looking after the environment
    • Being Safe - particularly featuring cyber, gaming and CSE
    • Relationships - including what is a healthy relationship
    • Money Matters - including enterprise

    The British Values of respect, tolerance, individual liberty, the rule of law and democracy run throughout the PSHE Matters scheme of work.

    The PSHE curriculum is further enhanced using our Worship schedule and Christian Values and  Picture News, a resource designed to support children's global awareness, and awareness days/weeks such as Down's Syndrome Day, Mental Health Awareness, Deaf Awareness and Williams Syndrome Awareness Month.

    Impact

    • Children enjoy their PSHE learning.  
    • The Early Years delivery of PSED has been developed and runs in line with the units of KS1 and KS2.  Children in this phase have been excited by the stories they have heard and have talked at length about the meanings of them.
    • Children across the phases have participated in learning activities around awareness days.
    • Use of books such as 'I Am Not a Label' and 'Little People, Big Dreams', in our SMILERS assembly, supports Difference and Diversity Development.
