Physical Education

Intent

We use Complete PE to support our delivery of Physical Education.

Our PE scheme of work fully aligns with the National Curriculum. Complete PE uses a physical literacy informed approach to ensure holistic outcomes are championed throughout. Pupils’ learning is celebrated physically, cognitively, socially and emotionally throughout the curriculum.

PE at the Woodland Federation aims to develop a fun, high-quality physical education curriculum that inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sports and other physically demanding activities. We offer a wide variety of physical activities so there is something that will appeal to everyone. In PE, children will develop their fundamental skills that they can then put into practise in games such as Boccia and Quidditch, as well as developing their skills in gymnastics, athletics and dance. We believe that swimming is a vital skill, and all children from Y1 upwards spend two terms per year swimming. As part of our wider offer of physical activity, children take part in yoga sessions, woodland learning and Commando Joe.

We will provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. Our children will have opportunities to compete in sport and other activities that build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect.

At our schools, PE is a vital element of the curriculum through which children develop an understanding about healthy lifestyles, a balanced diet and positive growth mind-set. They also develop the resilience to persevere with activities that they may once have felt too difficult.

We value highly the need to teach children how to cooperate and collaborate with others, as part of a team, understanding fairness and equity of play to embed life-long values.

Implementation

Children participate in weekly, high-quality PE and sporting activities.  Our PE programme incorporates a variety of sports to ensure all children develop the confidence, tolerance and the appreciation of their own and others’ strengths and weaknesses. Our approach encourages not only physical development but also well-being for all pupils.

Each child receives two hours of curriculum time PE on a weekly basis which is carefully planned and mapped out to ensure a broad and full range of skills and activities. Pupils in EYFS and KS1 are given ample opportunities to develop their fundamental movement skills and extend their agility, balance and coordination.

In KS2, pupils continue to apply and develop a broader range of skills such as football, netball, rounders, cricket, hockey, basketball, badminton and tennis and apply basic principles suitable for attacking and defending.

They also take part in gymnastics activities, take part in athletics activities, perform dances, take part in outdoor and adventurous activity challenges both individually and within a team. Pupils communicate and collaborate with each other and develop an understanding of how to improve in physical activities.

Children across the schools attend swimming lessons at the local swimming pool where they are taught to swim competently, confidently and proficiently using a range of strokes. We strive to reach our target recommended by the government of 60 minutes of physical activity each day.

Impact

P.E is taught as a basis for lifelong learning, where the children have access to a wide range of activities in the belief that if taught well and the children are allowed to succeed, then they will continue to have a physically active life. A high-quality physical education curriculum inspires all children to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically demanding activities. We provide opportunities for children to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. Opportunities to compete in sport and other activities build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect.
